On a basic level, the lighthouses perform 2x sweeps of IR lasers at a known angular velocity, and can compute distance and orientation based on the time at which each sensor on the tracker receives data.

Here’s a video looking at the base stations through infrared night vision goggles, notice how the metal door knob & hinges light up when they’re hit with light, this is a source of reflective interference and will make tracking quality worse.
